Vehicle getting repoed and sold after my mother-in-law signed it over to me

My mother-in-law signed a car over to me recently using power of attorney on behalf of her father. Her father has declined in health pretty bad and is in a nursing home. A while back the nursing home and my mother-in-law had a misunderstanding on payments so she owes a lot on payments (to the point where they almost evicted him). They ended up working on a payment plan but like I said, big debt. My husband and I have been stuck taking care of her and her children for a couple years now and I want to take my car and leave and focus on our marriage. When my mother-in-law found out she told me she was going to report the car to the collectors (sorry if not proper terminology) because they can claim anything that belonged to him from the past 3 years regardless of who owns it now.
**Is this true? Do I have to worry about the vehicle getting repoed and sold? The vehicle is completely paid off and the title is in my name.**
I live in the state of Texas in the United States.

NAL…Well….its not so clear cut. I do know(this is hearsay) that when my dad passed away, my mom bought a house(we had lived in a pastorium). someone she knew passed away after a long stint in the nursing home. the state went in and took her house(I also believe this was a state run nursing home). Even if in another person’s name they could go back 7 years and get it if it was passed down. So my mom paid off her house with the life insurance money and deeded it in mine and my sisters name(this was back around 03 or 04) So there is no way they could get it now as its been nearly 20 years. Only thing they could take is her car. Now this also may be a TN law. Was any money changed hands?

It was a gifted vehicle. I paid for everything necessary to be able to put the car into my name. Her father cannot drive, can’t really talk or anything anymore hence the power of attorney.

that would be the only thing….I think you should be okay as it wasn’t technically passed down….but the state doesn’t care…they want their money. I would keep those messages tho…might be beneficial later.

NAL but do work for an agency that runs rep payee and pooled asset trust programs. The father will be the one penalized in this situation. Also, cut that toxic ass woman out of your life immediately if not sooner.

NAL You’d think whoever’s name is on the title is the primary owner, so if your name is already on the title and it’s been cleared through the state I don’t think they can do jack shit about it.

Long story short she misunderstood or something in relations to the payments to the nursing home. It costs over $100 a day and she thought it was covered. They tried to evict him but the social worker reached out to her and they came up with a payment plan or something. She’s not the best at paying on time. His house is an asset but she wants to use the car because I want to leave. She doesn’t want to use the house as leverage because her golden child has taken up residence. Idk much because I’ve stopped paying attention to her and I’m only 22. I don’t understand any of this.

the house should be put in a trust in my opinion. That way her lack of payments doesn’t affect the home. Just my opinion of course. I could be mistaken

I know that his brother’s name is on the deed and it is in the will for him to get the house but like I said, I don’t know the extent of the debt or her lies and I don’t understand any of this. I just wanted to know if her threats could be valid or if she’s talking out of her ass.
