I live in a small town in West Virginia. We have had nothing but trouble for many many years with our sewer. The house is old and has the open drains in the basement but they still work well. The problem is that the sewer backs up in the city’s line. You can tell when it is on the city when you look down the pipe on the corner of the lot. We are the only home on this line. The problem is that the city’s pipe goes from terra cotta to plastic and back a few more times. They ran a camera down and saw where the pipes don’t line up any more. They have replaced pieces but not the whole thing. I don’t know if the years of sewer in my basement has done some structural damage but each time it happens I have to bleach the whole basement and hose it down with hot water. Should the city be responsible for damages and the years (15+) of stink and mess in my home?

I don’t have an answer for you but I know my brother and sister-in-law have dealt with a lot of terrible crap like this. Their tap water just come in through smells like sewage sometimes.
