So someone I know through mutual online friends messaged me the other night and said she needed my help. She said she was kicked out of her Facebook so she’s only on messenger. And that Facebook said a code would be sent to her friends for her to get back on Facebook. But I’m not on her Facebook friend list. She then said to check the code that I just got at 4:44pm. I told her that I didn’t get a code and she said to check my Gmail and if I find the code to please send it to her. I was so confused so I told her that she couldn’t know my Gmail address for that to even happen. In order for that to happen, she would have to know what my Gmail address is. She then claimed it was a code from Facebook security terms and that she didn’t have it. I told her that I wouldn’t get anything unless she had my email address. I then told her that I didn’t think any codes would be sent to me and told her I hoped she got the issue fixed soon. She then became persistent and sent a screen shot saying that it’s a code from Facebook security terms for them to identify a friend (again, we weren’t really friends) and requested the code again. I said that I didn’t know and she said to check my email again. I told her it won’t be there as I have nothing to do with her Facebook account and told her to find one of her trusted contacts to solve the issue. She then requested me give her the code AGAIN! I then checked my email and found an email from Facebook that said: “We received a request to reset your Facebook password. Enter the following reset code” and the time stamp was 4:44PM the EXACT same time she had messaged me: “Check your email for the code you just got.” I never requested this change! So she was trying to get into MY Facebook the entire time! I then told her that I could not help her and to please stop messaging me. What are the legal consequences of trying to or successfully gaining access to another person’s social media account?
