If that’s the case I’m not sure why your husband asked for that money unless the intent was just to keep it. If you’re going through a divorce in the US, you can bring up the gift of separate property to see if you are able to get anything back. It may be difficult if he was solely paying (although you giving him money negates that…).
I don’t practice in CA so I’m not sure what the alimony laws would be. Consult with a local family attorney who is familiar with USCIS rules.

And had to be married a certain amount of years and had to go to ins interviews and live together…which this is illegal…so we passed but it happens all the time.
So if he told ya the collateral thing he lied to you and actually screwed you and prejudiced himself…because it looks like he got paid to marry you in exchange for a green card.

Doesn’t sound like it was a loan. No contract for repayment I am assuming. Everything is expensive in California so if he paid all the bills, food, insurance etc for both you and him, I am sure he is out a lot more than double what you gave him.
